The straight swords in Elden Ring are just the default full size swords. They don't weigh much and have average range, turn speed, and damage. They are versatile and should work well against most enemy types, but don't expect them to be great against almost everything.
If you want something that just works without you having to worry, Straight Swords is the way to go!

short sword
The short sword is a basic starting weapon for the astrologer class and can be purchased for 600 runes from the merchant in North Limgrave near the bridge with the enemy Pumpkin Helm. It costs 600 runes, but can also drop from enemies carrying it.
long sword
The Longsword is the starting weapon for the Drifter class and can be purchased from Twin Maiden Husks for 1000 Runes.

Broadsword is the starting weapon for the Confessor class and can be bought for 800 runes from the vendor on the beach southwest of Limgrave near the cave where you need to complete Episode 2 Anakin Skywalker in the Demihuman tribe to save Bocs. .um .. sewing kit ...
This is also the vendor who sells the recipe for the neutralizing boluses that remove the effects of the poison.
aged straight sword
The Aged Straight Sword can be dropped by defeating weak white enemies that resemble Guardian Gostoc found in the Midlands. Many of them are maintained by perfumers in Lyndell, Royal Capital.
Lordsworn Straight Sword
The Lordsworn Straight Sword relies on defeating the enemies that wield it, especially normal enemy soldiers who wear a robe that represents their allegiance, such as Godfrey, Cuckoo, Redmane, etc. Not all enemy soldiers wield this weapon specifically, some use one instead of the longsword or spear. version.
If Goldilocks wielded a generic straight sword, he'd probably go for this one, as it's pretty average in weight, range, and damage potential.
noble slender sword
The Slender Sword of the Noble has a small chance to drop from Noble Wandering enemies that wield it. Usually, you can find a group of nobles nearby.caravans taken by trollsif you want to take care of agriculture. I personally haven't been able to get this to work, but I know it exists. Seems pretty common and generic, and C scales for Dexterity and E scales for Basic Strength.
cane sword
The Cane Sword can be looted from a corpse in Lyndell, Royal Capital, on the west face accessible by climbing the fallen dragon Gransax.
Garra de Warhawk
Warhawk's Talon can be dropped by Warhawk Birds, which mostly fly to Stormveil Castle.
Lazuli Glitzerstein Sword
The Lazuli Glintstone sword drops from the Lazuli Conspectus students who wield it. Lazulis wears lighter blue robes compared to those worn by other Conspectus at Raya Lucaria Academy. These enemies can also be found in Sellia, Town of Sorcery on Caelid.
Sword of the Carian Knight
The Carian Knight's Sword can be looted from oneguarded caravan near the four bell towers in western Liurnia. crystal sword
The Crystal Sword can be looted from a corpse in Albinaur Village in southwest Liurnia. This is quite similar to the Carian Knight's Sword, but the damage is stronger for physical than magic rather than being an even split, although none of the weapons in Ashes of War are moddable.
Podre-Kristallschwert
The Rotten Crystal Sword can be looted from a chest in the room before it drops on Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. It is identical to the Crystal Sword, except that it applies a small amount of Scarlet because it afflicts itself.
michelan knight sword
Knight Miquellan's sword is found atop a bell tower in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree. Similar in concept to Crystal Swords, but partially scales with Faith and deals Saint damage.
Decorative Straight Sword
The Ornamental Straight Sword drops from defeating the Grafted Kindred miniboss in the Chapel of Anticipation. Even if you were defeated in the first fight, you can return there through a specific portal in Four Steeples east of Liurnia.
Goldenes Epitaph
The Golden Epitaph can be looted from a corpse locked behind the stone sword keyed door at the beginning of the Auriza Hero's Tomb on the Altus Plateau, near the eastern entrance of Lyndell, the royal capital. It is the Faith/Holy analogue of the Carian Knight's Sword, offering equal amounts of Holy and Physical damage and Faith scaling.
Sword of Santa Trina
The Sword of Saint Trina can be looted from a locked chest behind a Stone Sword Key door in the Forsaken Ruins in western Caelid near the border with Limgrave. It scales slightly with Intelligence, but most of the damage dealt is physical, not magical. This sword is one of the few ways to also use the sleeping sickness.
Decorated by Eochaid
Eochaid's Insignia can be looted from a tombstone found on top of a cliff on the eastern outskirts of Limgrave. The only way to get to the cliff is to go through the Gaol cave, the entrance to which is located on Caelid.
coded sword
The Coded Sword rests on the throne in the room where the Two Fingers would be, at the physical location of the Roundtable Hold in Lyndell, Royal Capital. It is a unique weapon that weighs next to nothing and only deals holy damage while scaling on faith alone. Because it's made of light, it bypasses shields.
Sword and flame of the night
The Sword of Night and Flame can be looted from a chest on the ground floor of Caria Manor. The door to the chest room is locked, so you'll have to drop through the roof into the building, which can be accessed from the second floor of the mansion.
This sword is one of the most unique weapons in the game as it scales with 4 stats and deals damage with 3 different types. It is a valuable part of the Necromancer build, as it scales with Faith and Intelligence. If you want to know more, check out mineNecromancer Building Instructions.
The main door of the chamber is locked, so you will have to go down through the roof to access it.
The stopping point is in the hallways, which are pretty much equidistant from Lower Level Manor and Lost Graces Upper Level Manor, though you'll have to take the elevator down at Upper Level Manor.

growing tips
If you come across a sword wielded by an enemy and want it too, you'll have to knock that enemy down repeatedly until you drop the item. There are a few things you can do to make the process more efficient.
A big part of speeding up the process is increasing your detection stat, which determines how likely enemies will drop something when you defeat them. Discovery can be increased directly, but will also increase with your Arcane stat. 1 arcane point gives you 1 discovery point, so most of your benefits come from things that increase discovery directly.
